“And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold,
the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.”
In the fall of 1844, hundreds of thousands of Americans awaited the second coming of Christ on October 22 — inspired by the prophecies of Daniel 8:14 and the prophetic charts that made the vision plain. The charts are the tables of Habakkuk 2:2. The cry still sounds. The Bridegroom is still coming.
The parable of the ten virgins foretold the Advent movement precisely. The midnight cry was the proclamation that Christ was coming — October 22, 1844. Not all were ready.
“Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish… And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.”— Matthew 25:1–2, 6 — The Parable of the Ten Virgins
“Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”
— Revelation 14:7 (KJV) — First Angel: The Hour of Judgment is Come“And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”— Revelation 14:8 — Second Angel: Babylon is Fallen
The Second Angel’s message of Babylon’s fall was inseparably joined to the midnight cry of 1844. Charles Fitch preached “Come Out of Her, My People” in 1843. Babylon had fallen — all the Protestant churches that rejected the first angel’s message of the judgment hour were swept into spiritual darkness. The cry of Revelation 18:4 echoes still.
The Lord commanded Habakkuk to write the vision on tables — so he that runneth may read it. The 1843 and 1850 prophetic charts are the divine fulfillment of that command.
v.2 “And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
v.3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”
The Tables = The Prophecy Charts. The word “tables” in Habakkuk 2:2 refers to large writing tablets — exactly what the 1843 and 1850 prophetic charts were. These massive illustrated charts were carried to every campmeeting, hung on canvas, and used to preach Daniel 8:14 to hundreds of thousands across America. They fulfilled Habakkuk’s command: the vision was written plain, so that “he that runneth may read it.”
Designed by Charles Fitch and Apollos Hale. Used by William Miller and the Advent preachers to proclaim the 2300-day prophecy of Daniel 8:14 and the hour of judgment.
Study the 1843 Chart →Revised after October 22, 1844 to include the sanctuary truth, the third angel’s message, and the Sabbath — carried by the pioneers as the standard of the remnant.
Study the 1850 Chart →Though it tarry, wait for it — Habakkuk 2:3. Since the great disappointment of 1844, God’s remnant people have kept the commandments and waited. The sealing is not yet complete.
Christ did not appear visibly. But the prophecy was not in error — the sanctuary to be cleansed was in heaven, not on earth. The investigative judgment began in the Most Holy Place.
Captain Joseph Bates published The Seventh-Day Sabbath: A Perpetual Sign (1846). The fourth commandment — the seal of the living God — was restored to the remnant church.
Bates published his landmark tract showing that the 144,000 of Revelation 7 are those sealed with the Sabbath truth — the seal of God in their foreheads before the four winds are released.
The four angels hold the four winds. The sealing of the 144,000 continues. The third angel’s message calls God’s people out of Babylon. “Here is the patience of the saints.” — Rev. 14:12
Revelation 7:4 — “And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.”
“And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.”
“Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” The 144,000 are Sabbath keepers.
God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it at creation. He wrote it in stone with His own finger as the fourth commandment. Isaiah 66:22–23 reveals the Sabbath will be kept in the new earth — from one Sabbath to another, throughout eternity.
