What Is the 1843 Chart?

A visual diagram of the prophetic periods of Daniel and Revelation, published by the Millerite movement and used by preachers across America and Britain to proclaim the First Angel's Message — the hour of God's judgment.

"And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed."

— Daniel 8:14 (KJV) — the central prophecy of the chart

"Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters."

— Revelation 14:7 (KJV) — the message the chart proclaimed

"In the autumn of 1844, at the close of the 2300 days, there had been no cleansing of the sanctuary on earth... but the heavenly sanctuary."

— Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy

The 1843 chart presented — in striking visual form — the prophetic timeline of Daniel chapters 2, 7, 8, and 9, together with Revelation's seals, trumpets, and the Three Angels' Messages. It mapped 2,300 days of Daniel 8:14, the 1260-, 1290-, and 1335-day periods, and the 70-weeks prophecy showing Christ's first coming.

William Miller, Charles Fitch, Joshua Himes, Josiah Litch, and hundreds of other preachers carried this chart on the roads of America. Tent meetings drew thousands. The chart was the visual backbone of the greatest prophetic preaching movement in American history.

The 2300-Day Prophecy — Daniel 8:14

The central pillar of the 1843 chart. A prophetic timeline spanning from 457 BC to October 22, 1844.

The Calculation

  • 457 BC — Decree of Artaxerxes to restore Jerusalem (Ezra 7)
  • 457 BC + 2300 years = AD 1844
  • 70 weeks (490 years) cut off for Israel — Daniel 9:24–27
  • 69 weeks = 483 years → 27 AD — Christ's baptism
  • 70th week → 34 AD — stoning of Stephen, gospel to Gentiles
  • Remaining 1810 years → 1844
  • October 22, 1844 — Day of Atonement

"The time of the cleansing of the sanctuary, the 2300 days of Daniel 8:14, must begin with the seventy weeks... dating from the autumn of 457 B.C., the 2300 years terminate in the autumn of 1844."

— Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, ch. 23

The Great Disappointment

October 22, 1844 came and went without the visible return of Christ. The Great Disappointment scattered the movement. But within days, Hiram Edson and others understood: the prophecy was fulfilled — not on earth, but in the heavenly sanctuary. Christ entered the Most Holy Place to begin the investigative judgment. The sanctuary to be cleansed was in heaven, not on earth.

After 1844, the pioneers produced a new chart incorporating the heavenly sanctuary, the Sabbath, the sealing of the 144,000, and the Three Angels' Messages. Otis Nichols and others produced the 1850 chart as the definitive update.
